General Description
The Department of Theatre in the College of Fine Arts at the University of Montevallo invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Scenic Design beginning August 2024.
Essential Job Duties Instruction in Scenic Design and Technology production areas; Creation of scenic designs for all department productions; Design quality theatrical scenery and scenic elements for departmental theatre productions; Oversight and execution of scenic painting and related artistic crafts for all productions; Work closely with the Technical Director to facilitate construction, fabrication, and completion of scenic elements within production timelines and standards; Supervise and train student leaders and crews in scenic area(s) for applied classes.
Additional Duties Education and Experience MFA or other terminal degree in Scenic Design or related area of theatre, design, or technology; College teaching experience; Experience as a scenic designer in professional venues; Industry knowledge and demonstrated hands-on experience of scenic technology practices and design; Extensive knowledge of theatrical engineering safety standards; Computer competency in computer-aided drafting applications; Demonstrated commitment and ability to work with a diverse group of students and faculty; Ability to recruit and retain students Preferred Education and Experience Three years of teaching experience at the university/college level; Professional connections and recognitions within the areas of theatrical scenic design; Demonstrated experience with contemporary practices in world and regional theatre; Experience supervising students Licenses, Certification or Registrations None Number of Vacancies Desired Start Date Open Date 09/29/2023 Close Date Open Until Filled Yes Special Instructions to Applicants References will be contacted immediately after application submitted.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach eight courses per academic year, with 2 course-releases granted per semester for scenic designs of departmental productions.
Successful candidates will be highly collaborative and will participate in Theatre program recruiting, work closely with the department TD and Production Manager, provide student mentoring, and will be expected to participate in service opportunities like committees at the department and university level.
The ideal candidate will contribute to the diversity of the Department by bringing a perspective, way of thinking, and/or a unique set of experiences that expand the conversations and practices in their field.
Minimum Qualifications MFA or other terminal degree in Scenic Design or related area of theatre, design, or technology College teaching experience Experience as a scenic designer in professional venues.
