General Description
Peer mentors will help students:
Identify and use appropriate campus services;
Become familiar with academic policies;
Work on improving time management to avoid and/or overcome procrastination;
Set and maintain academic goals;
Organize class materials and prepare for assignments and exams;
Build self-confidence;
Adopt accountability strategies.
Essential Job Duties
-Establish and maintain interpersonal relationships with peers focusing on helping new students make a smooth transition, acclimate to campus, and establish a sense of belonging;
-Make weekly contact with mentees;
-Assist with workshops as requested by the Student Success Coach (SSC);
-Assist students in meeting academic expectations (attendance, grades, conduct, and accountability);
-Maintain confidentiality with peer’s personal information, such as contact information, issues, or problems;
-Determine conflict resolutions and understand when to seek advice and guidance from the SSC;
-Be considerate, courteous, friendly, and cooperative with fellow peers, staff, and mentees;
-Participate in mentor trainings and workshops assigned by the SSC;
-Meet regularly with the SSC to set goals and review progress of meeting those goals.
Education and Experience
Sophomore, Junior, or Senior.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
-Must be enrolled as a student at the University of Montevallo;
-Passed English 101 and English 102 with at least a B;
-Has a UM institutional GPA of 2.
75 or higher;
-Must possess strong oral and written communication skills;
-Desire to help students succeed;
-Have not had any student conduct referrals in the past year (previous 2 semesters).
