General Description
This is a temporary five-week position with the GEAR UP Summer College at the University of Montevallo.
Summer College serves rising high school juniors with an academic summer term where students have a college-like experience as high school students, with support, activities, and supervision appropriate for high school youth.
The Summer Recreation Coordinator will be primarily responsible for all aspects of planning, implementing, and supervising activities designed to focus on the social and cultural development of students.
Essential Job Duties Plan and implement activities that are developmentally appropriate for high school youth during non-class times.
Work with residence hall staff to guide the development and implementation of RA-led activities and events.
Develop weekly schedules, including all activities and special events that assign duty locations and specify responsibilities for program staff.
Work closely with the Summer Camp Director to ensure supervision and high-quality experiences for students during college visits and cultural field trips.
Maintain a positive attitude and growth mindset while developing, supervising, and participating in activities.
Ensure safety and maintain discipline during all on and off-campus activities.
Respond to any emergency situations that arise with maturity and problem-solving.
Facilitate acquiring supplies for all program activities; working with the GEAR UP office coordinator to ensure supplies are procured and ready for all activities.
Maintain accurate activity records that align with all supplies and material purchases.
Maintain accurate records and confidentiality regarding student FERPA, HIPPA, allergies, permission forms, and any other student records.
Additional Duties This position allows for the option of residing on campus during the summer program.
Must strive to create an atmosphere conducive to the students’ academic and social development to be independent persons in a community where diversity and difference are respected.

The individual holding this position will serve as a representative of the University and, as such, shall promote a positive impression by demonstrating a collegial and professional customer-service approach at all times Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to connect with both youth and adults; An understanding of youth development; Excellent written and oral communication skills; Superior organizational skills; Demonstrated ability to create complex activity schedules for students and staff Ability to work in a high energy residence hall, college campus and team environment.
Group development and management; Excellent interpersonal skills; Ability to motivate students and staff; Ability to react appropriately and provide leadership in crisis situations Adaptability is a key component of a residential program for high school age students Computer, telephone, other office-related equipment.
Education and Experience This position requires one year of teaching experience or experience leading youth in summer camp programs is required.
