General Description
Resident Advisors(RAs), are primarily responsible for ensuring the safety and security of our scholars.
Additionally, they ensure the effective and efficient residential operations of the Summer College at University of Montevallo, a GEAR UP initiative.
They supervise and live with high school students in a residence hall setting, supervising students both in the hall and around and off-campus during field trips.
RAs help students acclimate to the college community in a manner that is appropriate for the high-school aged youth
Essential Job Duties
Provide supervision and support to high school students participating in Summer College at UM.
Act as an advisor for the high school students in the program; pay close attention to students and help them navigate residential college in a way that provides support and helps students develop personal responsibility and skills needed to be successful in college, such as time management.
Provide supervision for students on and off-campus, in residence halls, during meals, and during free time.
Participate enthusiastically in all program activities.
Work with the Program Manager to plan and implement RA-led activities.
Be present and provide supervision at all scheduled duty spots.
Report all residence hall maintenance needs immediately.
Check in with your assigned students at curfew each night, as a group.
Report any behavior or safety concerns or behavior violations to your supervisor immediately.
Maintain a relationship with a cohort of students specifically assigned to you, and help them develop relationships and teamwork together.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
At least 2 full years of college post-high school.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
•Ability to connect with both youth and adults; An understanding of youth development;
•Excellent written and oral communication skills;
•Demonstrated ability to create complex activity schedules for students and staff
•Ability to work in a high energy residence hall, college campus and team environment.
•Excellent interpersonal skills;
•Ability to motivate students;
•Ability to react appropriately and provide leadership in crisis situations
•Adaptability is a key component of a residential program for high school age students
Preferred Major
Licenses, Certification or Registrations
Driver’s license preferred, ability to pass background checks, current first aid/cpr
