Description Position Summary: The Medical Student Services Case Manager for the University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine will focus on promoting holistic student wellness and success through provision of early support and follow-up for students with complex needs.
The Case Manager will monitor students and develop action plans to facilitate referrals to on-and off-campus resources.
They will coordinate the school's learning accommodations program.
In addition, the Case Manager will participate in programs, trainings, and workshops for students engaged in the Comprehensive Urban Underserved and Rural Experience Program (CU2RE).
The Case Manager will report directly to the Associate Dean for Students and the Associate Dean for Primary Care and Rural Health.
Duties and Responsibilities: Develop and maintain a database of wellness and social services resources within the school of medicine, university, and local community; facilitate relationships with on- and off-campus agencies and resources to connect students to long-term support.
Conduct initial intake meetings with students to assess needs for appropriate referrals.
Work with the Associate Dean for Students and the Medical Student Services team to address individual student behaviors which affect the student's wellness and academic performance and impact the learning environment for other students.
Manage accommodations for medical students with disabilities; serve as the school of medicine's liaison to the UAB Office of Disability Support Services.
Coordinate the Technical Standards Advisory Committee (TSAC) meetings.
The TSAC is a group composed of medical school faculty, students, and staff members tasked with ensuring that reasonable accommodations are implemented for medical students with disabilities.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to planning and coordinating biannual committee and ad hoc meetings, monitoring membership, and maintaining minutes and record of actions.
Coordinate support services, including referral and liaison with housing agencies, social services, mental health services, financial aid, food services, and other basic needs resources for students.
Assist students in making use of school of medicine, university, and/or community services and benefits by monitoring and tracking individual cases and progress to ensure compliance with recommendations, ongoing assessment and address new or emerging concerns as they arise or transition from campus services to external providers (e.
g.
psychiatric/psychological treatment services, housing, food, etc.
), and from external providers to appropriate school of medicine or university services.
Assist students taking voluntary leave and students placed on school-initiated leave to support financial, housing, and food security.
Provide crisis intervention for students with immediate definable needs such as shelter, food, financial, transportation, and other types of support as needed.
Plan, develop, and implement a marketing program detailing the services and assistance available from the Case Manager (to students, faculty, and staff).
Ensure accuracy of print and online publications related to the area of responsibility.
Assist in maintaining the current directory of community resources available to students, website updates and promotional content regularly Work with the Associate Dean for Primary Care and the Rural Health and the Comprehensive Urban Underserved and Rural Experience Program (CU2RE).
CU2RE is designed to enhance the recruitment, training, and retention of medical students dedicated to serving as family medicine physicians to provide primary care in the medically underserved urban and rural areas of Alabama.
CU2RE addresses six core areas related to interprofessional education, behavioral health, social determinants of health, cultural and linguistic competency, practice transformation, and telehealth.
The case manager will participate in programs, trainings, and workshops to facilitate CU2RE students' growth in these six core areas as it relates to patient advocacy through coordination of care, identification of patient needs, and linkage to medical care and community resources.
Participate in evidence-based training and assessment that address contemporary concerns in a medical student population and other educational initiatives for faculty, staff, and students as related to the case management role.
Help to identify outcomes specific to their role and used to guide quality improvement and assess program success.
Engage in continuous quality improvement.
Assists in the development and implementation of policies and procedures as relevant to the role including but not limited to outreach, education, and wellness initiatives.
Remain current and trained on standard Perform other duties as assigned Salary Range: $47,665 - $77,455 Qualifications Master's Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field and two (2) years of related experience required.
Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Currently licenses as a(n) Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) by the Alabama Board of Examiners in Counseling (ABEC) OR currently licensed as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) by the Alabama Board of Examiners in Marriage and Family Therapy OR currently licensed as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) by the Alabama State Board of Social Work Examiners required.
