The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks a Program Manager I (Collections and Gallery Manager) to be responsible for administratively managing a University department under the general direction of a functional Program Director or under the auspices of a Program Advising Committee and according to an established program plan.
May participate in the development of program objectives and is responsible for achieving objectives within defined parameters set by University and/or department policies and procedures or technical principles.
May require fiscal management of grants and other funds.
May manage multiple programs.
Requires the use of independent judgment to determine the best approach to accomplish objectives established in the program plan.
May supervise staff as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintains the collection database and works with Curator in a variety of collections related activities including but not limited to: processing of incoming collections and updating the database for existing collection objects; develop a deaccessioning policy and implementation; assist curator with collection research requests; conduct data entry checks periodically to assure consistency and quality of information; prepare the collection database for future implementation of an online public portal.
Remains current on best practices and ethics regarding museum collections stewardship including guidelines on best practices developed by the American Alliance of Museums and the Association of Academic Museums and Galleries.
Review and update collections stewardship policies and procedures as well as the emergency response plan in conjunction with the Curator.
Maintains and implements museum standards and ethics with regards to Collection Stewardship for the AMHS collection and acquisitions including but not limited to registrar processes, safe and ethical storage, research of proper storage methods and materials, all collection associated required.
Assist Curator with preparation and installation exhibitions for the Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences and UAB Libraries upcoming Historical Collections Gallery, as well as other AMHS related exhibitions on campus.
In collaboration with AMHS Curator, support and assist with the day-to-day functions of the Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences Collection and UAB Libraries Historical Collections Gallery exhibition space including but not limited to: Assist with collection and gallery tours as needed, manage daily operations of the gallery spaces and manage gallery student staff and interns in the gallery space, oversee and maintain opening and closing procedures.
Opportunities to identify and prepare materials for grants and other special projects, as well as professional development activities such as attending conferences and participation in national professional networks.
Assist curator with training and supervising student staff and interns performing work related to the collection and/or in the exhibition spaces.
Plan, implement, and oversee collection moves, organization, and inventory.
Perform condition reports on collection objects, and monitor the condition of objects while on display.
(Annual Salary: $41,175 - $66,915) Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Museum Studies, Anthropology, History, Cultural Studies OR a related field and two (2) years of related experience required.
Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Master’s degree in Museum studies, Museology, or other related field preferred.
Minimum one (1) year experience in museum collections stewardship preferred.
Preferred skills: Knowledge and training and/or experience in museum collections with hands-on object handling and collections management experience.
Knowledge and understanding of, as well as ability to manage and ensure compliance with museum ethics and principles.
Creative problem-solver who is adaptable Strong attention to detail Excellent verbal and written communication skills Ability to work collaboratively and foster a positive and cooperative work environment Ability and drive to take part in the larger collections management and museum community.
Excellent organizational skills Experience with Collector Systems or other museum collection management system.
Additional preferred skills: Experience in either teaching, giving tours, or other public speaking or teaching roles.
Supervising and training student employees or interns Knowledge of nomenclature Knowledge of museum legal and ethical issues such as NAGPRA Experience installing or fabricating museum exhibitions Experience with Digital Asset Management and Copyright Minimum technology Skills: Microsoft products Database management skills Physical Demands: Frequently requires lifting up to 10 pounds and occasionally requires lifting up to 25 pounds.
Regularly involves lifting, bending or other physical exertion.
