Job Description
The Heersink School of Medicine, Department of Surgery is currently recruiting faculty candidates to be considered for an open-rank, non-tenure or tenure track faculty appointment in the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery.
The successful candidate will be a fellowship trained minimally invasive surgeon with an interest in bariatric surgery.
The successful candidate will be expected to meet clinical, research, and teaching needs in the Department of Surgery with an anticipated split of 90% clinical practice focused on bariatric surgery and the rest on research, education, and administrative roles.
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the support of these practices.
Our faculty members are nationally-recognized experts in the field of gastrointestinal surgery.
We are home to one of the highest-volume academic robotics programs in the country and our bariatric surgery program is one of only 10 programs in Alabama accredited as a Comprehensive Center under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP®), a joint program of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
The Division is actively involved in clinical research aimed at quality improvement for surgical patients as well as basic science research including investigations into the impact of metabolic surgery on anxiety and drug addiction.
The Division also houses a highly sought after minimally invasive surgery fellowship.
In addition to our focus on patient care, we provide an environment that supports the education of health professionals and encourages advanced research to further medical science.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham, one of three autonomous institutions within The University of Alabama System, is the only four-year, public university in the state’s largest metropolitan area.
