Position Information School/College School of Engineering Title School of Engineering - Assistant/ Associate Professor - Mechanical and Materials Engineering - Automation and Control Assignment Category Full-Time Rank Assistant/Associate Professor Tenure Status Tenure Track Payroll Status Faculty 9 Job Description Faculty Positions in Mechanical Engineering The Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) Department at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications from highly qualified individuals to join our faculty. Various tenure-track positions are available at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (full time, nine months). Appointment ranks will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience and qualifications. Joint appointments with other departments are available if a strong synergy exists. Applicants must have a doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering or related fields, strong potential or record in conducting leading-edge research and publishing high-quality scholarly work, and the ability to contribute to the teaching mission of the department and the university at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The candidate should also be committed to serving the MME department and the university community. A proven track record of competitive funding as PI is preferred. Research Areas Ideal candidates will have a strong record of research and scholarship in automation, control, and robotics for improved efficiency, safety, and productivity. This can be leveraged through UAB’s strengths in the Materials Processing & Applications Development (MPAD) Center, a unique on-campus manufacturing pilot plant and foundry facility, as well as the broad biomedical community on the UAB campus. A candidate should be actively involved in the integration of mechanical and electronic systems, automation, sensors and actuators, control systems, embedded systems, and/or remote sensing. The expertise can also be related to electric vehicles, device-to-human integration, health systems, or remote medical diagnosis and surgery. Mechanical and Materials Engineering at UAB The MME Department has 18 faculty members, 240 undergraduate majors, 70 full-time graduate students, and more than 100 online master’s students. Current research strengths include computational fluid dynamics and structural mechanics, advanced manufacturing, metal castings and alloys, composites for industrial and defense applications, development and maintenance of hardware for space flight, automotive design and safety. The Department will be moving into a new state-of-the-art building in 2025, and is further supported by MPAD Center and Engineering and Innovative Technology Development (EITD) – one of the nation’s leading developers in cold stowage hardware for use in microgravity and space exploration. The Department offers excellent opportunities for collaboration with units across UAB in areas including biomechanics, disability and rehabilitation science, innovation and entrepreneurship, nanoscale materials, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, transportation, and more. Outside the university, UAB Engineering and the MME Department maintain strong ties with many steel, power, automotive, and defense companies in Alabama and nationally. The School of Engineering The UAB School of Engineering is dedicated to research excellence and providing the highest quality education to a diverse population of future engineers. The School has approximately 50 full-time faculty members and enrolls nearly 900 undergraduates across 6 undergraduate majors in four departments: Biomedical Engineering; Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering; Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical and Materials Engineering. Over 500 graduate students pursue a range of programs including traditional on-campus M.S./Ph.D. pathways as well as online M.Eng. degrees for working professionals. The school has close ties to companies in Birmingham, which serves as a regional hub for the construction, materials, power, and biotech industries.
