We invite applications from highly qualified individuals in the advanced manufacturing area at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.
This is for tenure-track appointments (full-time, nine months), and the rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience and qualifications.
Joint appointments with other departments are available if a strong synergy exists.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering or related fields, demonstrate strong potential or record in conducting leading-edge research and publishing high-quality scholarly work, and have high ability in fulfilling the department’s teaching mission at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
The candidate should also be willing to serve the MME department and the university community.
Research Areas Ideal candidates will have a strong record of research and scholarship in advanced manufacturing, which may be leveraged by working with the Materials Processing & Applications Development (MPAD) Center and Engineering and Innovative Technology Development (EITD).
A candidate should be actively involved in developing processes and designing innovative applications related to components and devices, sensing, signal and image analysis, monitoring, and materials.
Topics of interest include optimizing designs, predicting system behaviors, improving manufacturing processes, and enabling autonomous systems.
The areas of interest can also include creating intelligent, automated, and controllable systems that can sense their environment and respond accordingly.
Skills in applying machine learning, deep learning, and related approaches to the above areas are desired.
The expertise can also be related to materials under harsh conditions, automotive, defense, aerospace, and health science, such as collecting data and providing a feedback loop for demanding conditions, manufacturing of health systems, and device manufacturing.
Mechanical and Materials Engineering at UAB The MME Department has 18 faculty members, 240 undergraduate majors, 70 full-time graduate students, and more than 100 online master’s students.
Current research strengths include computational fluid dynamics and structural mechanics, advanced manufacturing, metal castings and alloys, and composites for industrial and defense applications.
The department will be moving into a new state-of-the-art building in 2025, and is further supported by a unique on-campus pilot plant and foundry facility, the Materials Processing & Applications Development (MPAD) Center as well as Engineering and Innovative Technology Development (EITD) – one of the nation’s leading developers in cold stowage hardware for use in microgravity and space exploration.
The Department offers excellent opportunities for collaboration with units across UAB in areas including autonomous vehicles, biomechanics, disability and rehabilitation science, innovation and entrepreneurship, nanoscale materials, transportation, and more.
