Job Description
| The Department of Sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor position with a start date of August 2024.
We seek a candidate with demonstrated scholarship in medical sociology, specifically around women, gender, and health.
Using funds from a gift to the department, the occupant of this position will play a leadership role in developing programing devoted to raising awareness for gender and women’s health issues.
This programing can be related to the candidate’s specific program of research or more broadly related to gender and women’s health.

Research in the department focuses on medical sociology and health-related topics.
Currently, the department has about 75 undergraduate majors, 25 Ph.
D.
students, 75 professional master’s students, and 15 full-time faculty members.

Interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching are prominent, and the Department of Sociology collaborates closely with multiple units across campus.
For example, interdisciplinary research centers on campus include the Center for the Study of Community Health, the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Center, the Center for Women’s Reproductive Health, the Lister Hill Center for Health Policy, the Institute for Human Rights, the Center for Social Science and Justice Research, and the Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences.

Required Qualifications Candidates should have a Ph.
D.
in Sociology or related field (obtained by August 2024), a record of strong independent research, experience with or potential for obtaining external funding, a strong commitment to and evidence of quality instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and a history of community involvement and/or programming.
Preferred Qualifications The candidate should be a generalist capable of teaching a variety of courses to meet departmental needs, have an interest in applied sociology, and genuinely enjoy working with students both online and in person.
Previous work with experiential learning programs is a plus.
